Advantages and Disadvantages of Particle Board

Particle board is new type of engineered wood product which is manufactured from gluing together sawdust, wood chips, sawmill and synthetic resin. This produces a flat and hard building material which is commonly used in construction sites. It is denser and cheaper than conventional wood and plywood. With this board’s common use in market, it is necessary to know how this board compares with other types of woods such as solid wood and plywood. Below given are advantages and disadvantages of this board.

  1. Low Cost

The major benefit of choosing particle board over plywood is that it cost effective. When compared to plywood furniture of same dimensions, its furniture costs less than half. It is low cost because these boards are not durable as solid wood.

  1. Pre-laminated boards

At the time of manufacturing, a thin layer of lamination is glued on the surface of particle boards. These boards are known as pre-laminated boards, and lamination increases beauty and durability of board. On other hand, if customers choose plywood furniture, they have to separately purchase laminate sheets, and all this increases overall cost of furniture.

  1. Light-weight

Particle board is light weight and furniture made from this board is easy to transport. Though this is advantage for many people, but this also indicates an important drawback which is that this board is not as strong as plywood.


  1. Low life and low durability

Particle boards are low on strength and are prone to get damaged because of humidity and moisture. Low strength means life of furniture made from these boards is not so long. Some shopkeepers selling this board clearly inform customer that it will last 2-3 years only. But, furniture made from plywood will last 15-20 years.

  1. Low on strength

This board is less dense and can get damaged easily. Additionally, the furniture made from this board is quite weak when compared to plywood.

  1. Cannot withstand heavy loads

Particle boards are not used in applications where boards have to support heavy weights. As these boards are low on strength that’s why boards are used for holding low weights only.
